Its medicinal effects

The  most important active ingredients of senna  are anthraquinone derivatives - sennosides - found in large quantities primarily in its leaves and to a lesser extent in its fruit, which have a strong laxative effect. In addition, we can also find flavonoids, mucilages, and calcium oxalate.

Anthraquinone can only be partially absorbed by the small intestine, and in the large intestine it is attacked by the intestinal flora. As a result, the so-called  free anthraquinones are formed , which provide the therapeutic effects of senna. This relatively long process can explain why the  laxative effect of senna  usually occurs only 12-16 hours after its intake. Free anthraquinones exert their effect mainly in the lateral colon and sigmoid colon. Here they reduce the absorption of water, sodium and chlorine, and stimulate the mucosa of the large intestine to increase potassium excretion. This results in a higher water content in the intestines, which softens and increases the amount of stool; short-term use eliminates chronic constipation. The  laxative ability of senna  is enhanced by the fact that the anthraquinone derivatives directly stimulate the nerve trunks of the large intestine, thereby accelerating bowel movements and the evacuation of stool. All this helps detoxify the body, cleanse the intestines, and deworm, since with accelerated bowel movements, accumulated toxins and waste products, as well as parasites and their eggs, are removed from the digestive system. It is no coincidence that senna is one of the best natural detoxifiers. Thanks to the fact that it softens the stool, it helps prevent the development of hemorrhoids and rectal fissures. And that's not all: senna also cleanses the stomach, as it has a strong emetic effect. Since it  accelerates metabolic processes and digested food passes through the intestinal tract faster, consuming senna reduces the amount of calories entering the blood, thereby preventing weight gain and contributing to the success of weight loss diets. It strengthens the immune system, reduces the risk of colon cancer, and also has antibacterial properties.

Senna   contains pinitol, which is a kind of insulin-mimicking substance that can reduce blood sugar levels: it does not actually produce insulin, nor does it support its production, but when it enters the bloodstream, it supports glucose metabolism and improves the body's energy use. In homeopathy,  senna tincture  - a medicinal extract - is also often used in cases of acetonemic (difficult to suppress) vomiting in children. Due to its anti-inflammatory effect, an ointment made from senna can be used to treat acne, psoriasis and eczema, and its extract makes hair more beautiful and stronger.

It is very important to only use senna as a laxative if no other method has worked, as the plant can cause heart problems and digestive complaints.
